Inertial navigation

Japanese: 慣性航法 - かんせいこうほう

A navigation method that uses a computer to calculate speed, distance traveled, and other information by detecting three-dimensional acceleration without relying on the medium of terrestrial or celestial objects or radio waves. It is used in aircraft, submarines, and the guidance of rockets and missiles (called inertial guidance). Precision gyroscopes are usually used to detect acceleration. Devices that automatically correct the course by comparing it with planned route data are also used.

地物，天体や電波などの媒介によらず，三次元の加速度を検出して，速度，移動距離などをコンピューターによって算出する航法。航空機，潜水艦をはじめ，ロケットやミサイルの誘導（慣性誘導という）にも利用されている。加速度の検出には精密なジャイロスコープを用いるのがふつう。予定経路データと対照して自動的にコースを修正する装置も利用されている。
