1622‐90 Spanish painter. Representative of the brutal realism of Spanish Baroque painting. Born in Seville and died in the same city. His father was a Portuguese silversmith, and he took his mother's surname. In 1660, he founded the Academy with Murillo, but the two were contrasting in both personality and work. He valued expressiveness over beauty, and was one of the representatives of the "bravery bloodline" that ran through the Spanish school. His works, such as Defeat of the Muslim Army at the Gates of Assisi (1653-54), which shows the influence of Rubens, are a precursor to Goya's paintings with their quick touch, excellent sense of color, and expressionistic tendencies.
