Spanish painter. Representative of the brutal realism of Spanish Baroque painting. Born in Seville and died in the same city. His father was a Portuguese silversmith, and he took his mother's surname. In 1660, he founded the Academy with Murillo, but the two were contrasting in both personality and work. He valued expressiveness over beauty, and was one of the representatives of the "bravery bloodline" that ran through the Spanish school. His works, such as Defeat of the Muslim Army at the Gates of Assisi (1653-54), which shows the influence of Rubens, are a precursor to Goya's paintings with their quick touch, excellent sense of color, and expressionistic tendencies.

スペインの画家。スペイン･バロック絵画において残酷なまでのレアリスムを代表する。セビリャに生まれ同市で没。ポルトガル人の銀細工師を父にもち，母方の姓を名のる。1660年ムリーリョとアカデミーを創設したが，性格，作品ともに両者は対照をなす。美よりも表現性を尊び，スペイン派に流れる〈勇猛な血脈〉を代表する一人。ルーベンスの影響を見せる《アッシジ城門前でのイスラム軍の敗北》(1653‐54)等で，迅速なタッチ，優れた色彩感覚そして表現主義的な傾向によってゴヤの絵画に先駆する。
