In the Edo period, aona became a general term for such leafy vegetables, and the above-ground parts of turnips came to be called kaburana or kabuna, meaning turnip greens. The Honcho Shokan (1697) states that in spring, the stems that grow large and stand upright, and the two-leafed plants that have just sprouted from the seeds, are called kaiwarina, and those that grow to about 10 cm are called uguisuna. …
