Canadian physiologist. He initially studied theology at the University of Toronto, but soon switched to medicine, graduating in 1916. He served as a military doctor in World War I, and after being wounded and discharged, worked at the Toronto Children's Hospital. In 1921, in the laboratory of University of Toronto professor JJR Macleod, together with his assistant CH Best, he attempted to extract a blood sugar-lowering factor secreted from the pancreas in dogs, discovering insulin and successfully using it to treat diabetes (1922). For this achievement, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Macleod in 1923. However, Macleod did not acknowledge Macleod's achievement, and shared the prize money with Best. In the same year, he became director of the University of Toronto's Institute of Medical Research, and thereafter devoted himself to research into cancer and blood clots. He died in an airplane crash in 1941. Source: Morikita Publishing "Chemical Dictionary (2nd Edition)" Information about the Chemical Dictionary 2nd Edition |
