Hallstatt culture

Hallstatt culture

A culture from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age found throughout Europe. Its name comes from the ruins that lie on the shores of the lake of the same name, southeast of Salzburg, Austria. The ruins have been known since the 18th century and have been frequently investigated, resulting in the discovery of as many as 2,500 graves. Many graves have been discovered at other sites, but relatively few residential sites have been discovered. Many are inherited from the indigenous Urnenfeld culture, but the influence of Greek culture is also evident. Many metal products such as bronze and iron are buried in the graves. Horse equipment and chariots, which indicate the use of horses, have also been found as grave goods. It is often associated with the Celts. Some of the forts from this period appear in Caesar's "Commentaries on the Gallic Wars."
