A city in northern Romania. Located on the Bistrica River. Settled by Germans from Transylvania in the early 13th century, it flourished as a trading hub throughout the Middle Ages. After World War I, it became part of the Kingdom of Romania. In the old town, medieval fortress towers and walls remain, as well as an evangelical church with a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic styles.
