The name of a town in the southwest of Taito Ward, Tokyo. It has disappeared under the current residential address system, but its name remains at Okachimachi Station between Ueno and Akihabara on the JR Yamanote and Keihin Tohoku lines, Shin-Okachimachi Station on the Tsukuba Express, Naka-Okachimachi Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, two stations on the Toei Oedo Line (Shin-Okachimachi and Ueno-Okachimachi), and Okachimachi Taito Junior High School. During the Edo period, the name of the town originated from the residences of the Okachimachi Guards, who accompanied the shogun on foot to lead and guard his procession when he went out, and was a town on the eastern side parallel to Ueno Hirokoji and Onarimichi. In addition to Okachimachi, the Okachimachi Guards also lived in Naka-Okachimachi, Neribei-cho, Matsunaga-cho (Chiyoda Ward), and other areas that no longer exist.
