1694‐1753 British patron of the arts and architect. Born in London. As a young man he became fascinated with the 16th century Italian architect Palladio, and worked as an architect and patron throughout his life. After returning from Italy in 1719, he designed Chiswick House (c. 1725) modelled on Palladio's Villa Rotonda, and published a collection of Palladio's architectural drawings (1730). He also had architects W. Kent and Colin Campbell (c. 1676-1729) design and publish their works. These activities of his made Palladianism fashionable.
