Unlike exotoxins produced by bacteria such as diphtheria, tetanus, and botulinum, toxins such as Shigella, Salmonella typhi, and cholera are toxins that are retained within bacterial cells and are not secreted outside the bacterial body, but are released when the bacterial body is destroyed. They are also called endotoxins. The chemical basis of what is called endotoxins is lipopolysaccharides derived from the bacterial cell wall, or a complex of lipopolysaccharides and proteins. In other words, endotoxins are a general term for toxic substances found in the substances that make up bacteria. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
