The Revised Standard Version of the Bible

…Especially after the publication of the revised version of the King James Version at the end of the 19th century, new and revised versions were attempted one after another, and over 50 English translations were published in the UK and the US during the 20th century. Of particular note among these are the American Revised Standard Version (New Testament 1946, complete translation 1952-57), which tried to modernize the King James Version as much as possible while respecting its traditions as much as possible, the New English Version (New Testament 1961, complete translation 1970), which is a dignified translation in modern British English that deliberately abandoned the King James Version tradition, and the American Bible Society's American colloquial translation, the Modern English Version (New Testament 1966, complete translation 1976). The Revised Standard Version was planned as the official translation of American Protestants, but the Catholic Church of England soon made it its official translation after making minor changes to it. …
