The shipwright Argos, under the protection of the goddess Athena, built the first large ship in human history with 50 oarsmen. …Io was loved by Zeus and gave herself to the god, but Zeus, to avoid the jealousy of his wife Hera, transformed her into a white cow. Hera, however, became suspicious of the cow and took it from her husband, putting the hundred-eyed monster Argos (also nicknamed Panoptēs, meaning "all-seeing") to watch over her day and night. Zeus then ordered Hermes to kill Argos, and Hera sent horseflies to torment Io, so that in a madness she wandered from country to country, crossing from Europe to Asia (hence the name of the strait of the Bosporus, meaning "crossing of the cow"), and finally to Egypt. …
