A haiku poet of the early Edo period. Mr. Sugiyama. Commonly known as Ichibei. Also known by the pseudonym Saitian. A wealthy merchant who ran a fish business in Odawara-cho, Edo, for the shogunate and feudal lords. His family name was Koiya. He studied haiku under Matsuo Basho from around 1675-76 (3rd-4th year of the Enpo era) and played an important role in the formation of the Basho school with works such as "Tokiwaya no Kuawase" (Tokiwaya Kuawase: A Conversation of Poems by a Master of Tosei) and "Twenty Poets of Poets by a Master of Tosei." He also became Basho's economic protector, providing financial support for the construction of Basho-an in Fukagawa and continuing to support his livelihood until the end. Although he was busy with his main job, he was not very active in the haiku world, but he always followed his teacher's instructions faithfully, and because he was honest and gentle, Basho trusted him highly, and the public regarded him as a senior member of the Basho school. His grave is at Seishoji Temple in Miyasaka, Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. His haiku collection includes "Sugikaze Kushu" (1785, compiled by Umejin).
