...As the number of immigrants (many of whom were the children of convicts) exceeded that of free immigrants, the conflict turned into one between squatters (large ranchers) and small farmers and itinerant workers such as shearers, which was further exacerbated by the rapid population increase caused by the gold rush that began in 1851. In order to curb the squatters' land occupation, the British government created small farmers called selectors in the early days of joint stock land development companies, and in 1861 a new land policy was introduced. As the squatters' demands for the liberation of British land in the colonies intensified, the desire to gain greater autonomy from the British government and to freely acquire land grew in the late 1840s.

However, the squatters fought back by using dummies to seize the selections that had water sources, leading to fierce conflict with the small farmers, known as selectors. The mass emergence of bushrangers (highwaymen) among the impoverished selectors was a by-product of this conflict. ...
