A state in northwest India. Area: 44,000 km2, population: 16.46 million (1991). Capital: Chandigarh. In 1966, the state was formed from the Hindi-speaking areas of the then Punjab state. The state's name means "the place where Vishnu (Hari is another name for him) resides." It is located at the southeastern end of the Punjab plain, and is a low, flat plain 200-300 meters above sea level that slopes gently from northeast to southwest. Most areas receive around 400 mm of precipitation, and the southwestern end is on the northern edge of the Thar Desert. As the majority of the cultivated land is irrigated by the West Yamuna canal network, it produces a lot of wheat, rice, sugarcane, oil crops, chickpeas, etc., and is one of India's major grain producers along with Punjab.
