[Born] 1860 [Died] 1941 Founder of the Philippine Independent Church. Born into a peasant family in Northern Luzon. Educated as a priest, he engaged in missionary work in the Ilocos region. Rebellious against Spanish rule, he became devoted to the nationalist Mabini, and in October 1898, he was appointed General of the Philippine Military Church by the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Philippines. He issued a series of circulars calling for the nationalization of the church and breaking away from the Roman Catholic Church. The number of believers in the Philippine Independent Church, which was established in 1902, reached 1.5 million within a few years.
