Háry János

Japanese: ハーリ･ヤーノシュ（英語表記）Háry János

The name of the protagonist of the narrative poem The Old Soldier (1843) written by the Hungarian János Garay. He was a real potter, but is considered a legendary figure as a typical example of the peasant soldiers of Hungary under the rule of the Austrian Empire of the Habsburgs. The elderly veteran Háry János tells stories about his time in the military to young people in a tavern in his hometown, some of which are tall tales. The Hungarian composer Kodály composed a musical drama based on his tall tales, including one about fighting Napoleon and winning, one about falling in love at first sight with the wife of Austrian Emperor Franz, and one about subjugating a seven-headed dragon (premiered in 1926).

ハンガリー人のガライ･ヤーノシュGaray Jánosによって書かれた物語詩《老兵》(1843)の主人公の名。実在した陶工であるが，ハプスブルク家のオーストリア帝国の支配下にあったハンガリーの，農民兵の一典型として，伝説的人物とされている。老いた退役兵ハーリ･ヤーノシュは，故郷の居酒屋で，若者たちを相手に兵役時代の話をほらをまじえて話す。ナポレオンと戦って勝った話，オーストリア帝国の皇帝フランツの妃にひと目ぼれされた話，七つ頭の竜を組み伏せた話など，ハンガリーの作曲家コダイは，この人物のほら話を楽劇として作曲した(初演は1926)。
