A city in the southeastern part of Hyogo Prefecture. The prefectural capital. A designated city. It faces Osaka Bay. 兵庫県南東部の市。県庁所在地。指定都市。大阪湾に臨む。古代、大輪田泊おおわだのとまりとして知られ、のち、平清盛が改修して兵庫津ひょうごのつとよばれた。慶応3年（1867）の開港後、国際港として急速に発展。阪神工業地帯の一中心。平成7年（1995）阪神・淡路大震災の被害を受けた。名称は生田いくた神社の神戸かんべに由来。人口154.5万（2010）。
