In 1746, during the War of the Austrian Succession, citizens of Genoa, occupied by Austria, revolted and succeeded in expelling the occupying forces. Legend has it that the revolt was sparked by a stone thrown by a boy named Balilla (real name Giovan Battista Pelasso, 1729-81), hence the name Barilla Putsch. In the 20th century, the Italian Fascist government used Barilla's name as a symbol of courage and patriotism, and organized a national youth organization called the Barilla National Works.
