Seismic waves are used to investigate the geological structure of the ocean floor and lake bottom. Sound is emitted underwater and the reflected or refracted sound waves are used to investigate the geological structure below the bottom. Sound sources include sparkers that use underwater discharges, air guns that use compressed air, and boomers that use vibrating plates. There are also known cases where these devices are loaded onto submersibles and used for deep sea exploration.
