Also called an ozonide. A compound in which the electrophilic species ozone is added to the double bond of alkenes. Generally, it is an oily liquid that decomposes easily and is explosive. It easily produces aldehydes and ketones by reaction with water or reduction. This decomposition reaction is called ozonolysis, and is used to determine the structure of unsaturated compounds.
