A perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family that grows in mountain grasslands and is about 1m tall (illustration). The entire plant has a distinctive mint-like scent. The stem is square and branches at the top, and has fine powdery white hairs on the undersides of the leaves. The leaves grow opposite each other, with 1-4cm petioles, broad ovate blades 5-10cm long, pointed tips, sawtooth edges, and round or heart-shaped bases. From summer to autumn, cylindrical inflorescences are produced at the ends of the branches at the top of the stems, and densely packed magenta or bluish purple flowers are produced. The inflorescences are cylindrical, 5-15cm long and about 2cm wide. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
