290 BCE - 229 BCE Carthaginian politician and general. Father of Hannibal. Barcas means "thunderbolt." At the end of the First Punic War, he led a fleet to attack the southern coast of Italy, and after harassing the Roman army with guerilla warfare in Sicily, he played an active role in peace negotiations with Rome. After the war, he suppressed a mercenary rebellion, but in 237 BC, he led his troops to Spain, conquered southern Spain, and established the foundation for the Barcasid family's rule. It is unclear whether he intended to wage a war of revenge against Rome. However, it is certain that the indirect cause of the conflict between Rome and Carthage was the Barcasid family's rule of Spain. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
