In 490 BCE, during the Persian Wars, the Athenian army led by Miltiades defeated the Persian army at Marathon on the east coast of Attica. The modern Olympic marathon event was inspired by the legend that a messenger from that battle ran all the way to Athens and died after reporting the victory.
