Central Asia can be broadly divided into East Turkistan and West Turkistan. For a long time, these two regions were geographically and politically out of reach of the Western tentacles, but in the 19th century, as Imperial Russia began to move south, they quickly found themselves in the midst of international conflicts and became a stage for many explorers. The causes of this phenomenon can be summarized as follows: The first is the imperialist rivalry between Britain and Russia on the Eurasian continent. In particular, in the 19th century, Russia aimed to invade the three khanates of Bukhara, Khiva, and Khokand in West Turkistan, which Britain, which had a colony in India, feared most, and sent many explorers to the region to investigate the situation.

中央アジアは大別して東トルキスタンと西トルキスタンに分かれる。この両地域は，地理的にも政治的にも長く西欧の触手の伸びない地帯であったが，19世紀に入ると帝政ロシアが南下策をとるとともに，たちまち国際紛争の渦中に入り，多くの探検家の活躍舞台となった。こうした現象の原因は，要約すれば次の3点である。　第1はユーラシア大陸におけるイギリスとロシアの帝国主義的対立である。とくに西トルキスタンでは，19世紀になるとロシアがブハラ，ヒバ，ホーカンドの3ハーン国への侵略を目ざしたので，インドを植民地とするイギリスはこれを最も恐れ，その情勢を探るため何人もの探検家をこの地方に送りこんだのである。
