Also known as Halley's Comet. I. Newton published in his book Principia that the orbit of the great comet that appeared in 1680 was a parabola, and that comets also move according to the law of universal gravitation. E. Halley used this method to calculate the orbits of 24 great comets for which observation records were available at the time. As a result, he noticed that the orbits of the three great comets that appeared in 1531, 1607, and 1682 were very similar to each other, and because the intervals between their appearances were about 75 years, he concluded that these three comets were probably the same comet that appeared periodically. ハレーすい星ともいう。I.ニュートンは,1680年に出現した大すい星の軌道が放物線で,すい星も万有引力の法則に従って運行していることを著書《プリンキピア》に公表した。E.ハリーはこの方法を用いて,当時,観測記録の残っていた24個の大すい星の軌道を計算した。その結果,1531年,1607年,82年に出現した3個の大すい星の軌道が,互いによく似ていることに気づき,出現の間隔が約75年であることから,これら3すい星は同一のすい星が周期的に出現したものであろうと判断した。
