Sogyo Hachiman

Hachiman is depicted with shaved head and wearing a Buddhist robe. He holds a rosary in his left hand and a shakujo in his right. Hachiman, who was enshrined at Usa Jingu in Kyushu, was given the title of Hachiman Daibosatsu during the Heian period when esoteric Buddhism and Shintoism were syncretized. The most famous sculptures are those at Yakushi-ji Temple and Todai-ji Temple (by Kaikei), and the most famous paintings are those at Jingo-ji Temple and Ninna-ji Temple. 剃髪(ていはつ)し袈裟(けさ)を着けた姿に表現された八幡神。左手に数珠，右手に錫杖(しゃくじょう)を持つ。九州の宇佐神宮にまつられていた八幡神が平安時代に密教と神仏習合して八幡大菩薩の号を与えられたのに始まる。彫像では，薬師寺，東大寺（快慶作）のもの，絵では神護寺，仁和(にんな)寺のものが著名。
