Hachiman is depicted with shaved head and wearing a Buddhist robe. He holds a rosary in his left hand and a shakujo in his right. Hachiman, who was enshrined at Usa Jingu in Kyushu, was given the title of Hachiman Daibosatsu during the Heian period when esoteric Buddhism and Shintoism were syncretized. The most famous sculptures are those at Yakushi-ji Temple and Todai-ji Temple (by Kaikei), and the most famous paintings are those at Jingo-ji Temple and Ninna-ji Temple.
