Shigeharu Nakata

Founder of the Japan Holiness Church. Born in Hirosaki (Hirosaki City) in Mutsu Province. Encouraged by his mother Chiyo, he went to a Christian lecture hall (Hirosaki Church). He was baptized by missionary GF Draper. The date is unknown. He was educated at To-o Gijuku. He then moved to Tokyo and studied theology at Tokyo Eiwa Gakko (Aoyama Gakuin). Although he was unable to graduate, he worked as a missionary in various places, including Otaru in Hokkaido and Etorofu Island. In 1897 (Meiji 30), he traveled to the United States and studied at Moody Theological Seminary in Chicago. After returning to Japan, he became a traveling Methodist missionary, but later left the church. In 1917 (Taisho 6), he became the first bishop of the Japan Holiness Church of the Oriental Missionary Society, and did his best to develop the denomination. The following year, he became immersed in the "Second Advent Movement" with Uchimura Kanzo and Kimura Seimatsu. In 1936 (Showa 11), he became independent and organized the "Kiyome Church." 日本ホーリネス教会の創立者。陸奥国弘前(弘前市)生まれ。母千代の勧めでキリスト教講義所(弘前教会)に行く。宣教師G.F.ドレーパーから受洗。その日は不明。東奥義塾で教育を受ける。その後上京して,東京英和学校(青山学院)で神学を学ぶ。卒業はできなかったが,伝道者として北海道の小樽や択捉島など各地で働く。明治30(1897)年渡米し,シカゴにあるムーデー神学校で学ぶ。帰国後は,メソヂスト巡回伝道師になるが,のちに脱会。大正6(1917)年東洋宣教会日本ホーリネス教会の初代監督となり,同派の発展に力を尽くした。翌年内村鑑三,木村清松と「再臨運動」に没頭する。昭和11(1936)年,独立して「きよめ教会」を組織する。留学中に得た聖化の信仰に生きた異色の伝道者といえよう。<著作>『中田重治全集』7巻<参考文献>米田勇『中田重治伝』
