Variscan orogeny

A series of mountain building events that occurred in Europe in the late Paleozoic era, which gradually evolved from the Carboniferous period into mountain ranges. Also called the Variscan orogeny. The southern part of this region was subject to granite intrusion and regional metamorphism, while the northern part underwent significant folding. In the case of Europe as a whole, the term Hercynian orogeny is often used. Also, significant changes occurred around the world at roughly the same time as the Variscan orogeny. Good examples include the Ural Mountains, the Tian Shan, and the Appalachian Mountains.

古生代後期にヨーロッパに起こり，石炭紀からしだいに造山運動を受けて山脈化した一連の造山運動。バリスカン変動ともいう。この地域の南側は花崗岩の貫入や広域変成作用を受け，北側の地域は著しい褶曲運動を受けている。なおヨーロッパ全体の場合はヘルシニアン造山運動という言い方をよく用いる。また，バリスカン造山運動とほぼ同じ時期に世界各地でも著しい変動があった。ウラル山脈，天山山脈，アパラチア山脈などがその好例である。
