A hill range stretching from Cape Carmel, which forms part of the Israeli port of Haifa, south of the Gulf of Acco on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, toward central Palestine. Its highest peak is 546m. The plain of Jezreel spreads out on the northeastern foot of the mountain, and the mountains of Galilee can be seen behind it. The original meaning of its name is "garden, orchard." It appears in the Old Testament as a symbol of beauty and prosperity (Song of Solomon 7:5, Isaiah 35:2). It is also famous as the place where the prophet Elijah confronted the worshippers of Baal (1 Kings 18). Even today, it is a beautiful mountain with oak and olive trees thriving.
