A medieval samurai family whose main territory was in Haruya-mikuriya in Musashi Province (present Yokohama City). It is also called "Hangaya". It began when Shigetomo, the son of Arisige, was a branch of the powerful Oyamada clan in Musashi Province and took the name Haruya. Shigetomo was a brave man who served Minamoto no Yoritomo closely because of his martial arts, especially his archery skills, but an anecdote in the Azuma Kagami that says he washed Yoritomo's horse every day during the Oshu War shows Shigetomo's simple character. In 1205 (Genkyu 2), a plot by Tokimasa and others to destroy the Hatakeyama clan, which was in conflict with Tokimasa, in order to make Hiraga Tomomasa, the son-in-law of Hojo Tokimasa's second wife, Makikata, the shogun, was discovered (the Makishi Incident).
