Halikarnassos (English spelling)

Japanese: ハリカルナッソス(英語表記)Halikarnassos
Halikarnassos (English spelling)
An ancient Greek city in Caria on the southwest coast of Asia Minor. Now Bodrum, Turkey. It was probably founded around 900 BC by the Trozens of the Peloponnese. According to the historian Herodotus, it was a Doric city, but its culture in the classical period was Ionian. During the Persian Wars, it was in the sphere of influence of the Achaemenid Empire, but Mausolus, the governor of Caria, made it his capital around 370 BC and built a port and public buildings. After his death, the Mausoleion, a tomb for him, was built and is counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It is also famous as the birthplace of Herodotus.
