A city in central Niigata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The western part is part of the Echigo Plain, and the city center is at the mouth of the Kamo River, through which the Shinetsu Main Line passes. It has long developed as a six-storey market town. In addition to producing high-quality Koshihikari rice, the city is rich in fruit such as pears, peaches and grapes. Traditional industries include Kamo paper processing and Kamo striped paper production, and the manufacture of chests and fittings is also thriving. In recent years, chemical fiber, electrical appliance and general machinery industries have also been active. 新潟県中部の市。1954年市制。西部は越後平野の一部で,加茂川の谷口に中心市街があり,信越本線が通じている。古くから六斎市場町として発達。良質米コシヒカリのほか洋ナシ,モモ,ブドウなどの果樹の産が多い。伝統産業としては加茂紙加工,加茂縞(じま)の産があり,たんす・建具製造も盛ん。近年は化繊・電気器具・一般機械工業も行われる。ユキツバキの群落のある加茂山公園,青海(おうみ)神社がある。133.72km2。2万9762人(2010)。
