Valentin de Boulogne

French painter. He went to Rome in 1612 and studied under Boué and Manfredi, and was particularly influenced by Caravaggio. He was interested in genre painting, and depicted the lower classes of Rome. He also created religious paintings such as The Last Supper as depictions of the masses. He was sponsored by the Barberini family, and painted The Martyrdom of Prosessus and Martinian (1629) for the family. He died in Rome. [Tanaka Hidemichi]

フランスの画家。1612年にローマに行き，ブーエやマンフレディManfrediに学び，とくにカラバッジョの影響を強く受けた。風俗画に関心をもち，ローマの下層社会を描く。《最後の晩餐》などの宗教画も民衆的な図として描いている。バルベリーニBarberini家の後援を受け，《プロセッススとマルティニアンの殉教》(1629)は同家のために描いた。ローマで没。【田中英道】
