One of the Tensho Embassies to Europe. His Portuguese name is "Martin do Campo". Born in Hasami, Omura Domain (Nagasaki Prefecture). He was a member of the first class of Arima Seminario (minor seminary). He departed from Nagasaki in 1582 (Tensho 10) as the deputy envoy of the youth mission sent by the Christian feudal lord Omura. In 1590, he returned to Japan, where Christianity was banned, and the following year in 1591, he joined the Society of Jesus in Amakusa (Kumamoto Prefecture). He was skilled in Latin and was active as a seminary teacher and an excellent preacher. As secretary to the provincial superior in Nagasaki, he worked hard, especially in publishing, and contributed greatly to cultural history. He became a priest in 1608 (Keicho 13), but was exiled to Macau when Christianity was banned in 1614. Due to the severe persecution he faced he missed the opportunity to re-enter Japan and died there in 1623.
