Freya's fritillary

This butterfly belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Nymphalidae. It is an alpine butterfly found in the mountains of Hokkaido Daisetsuzan mountain range, which are about 1,800 meters or higher, and is designated as a national natural monument. Outside of Japan, it is found in cold regions around the Arctic, such as the Greater Xing'an Mountains in northeastern China, northern Siberia, Lapland, Scandinavia, Alaska, Canada, and the mountains of North America, and is known as a circumpolar species. It is the smallest of the Japanese fritillary butterflies. Its wingspan is about 35 mm. It appears once a year, usually from early July to mid-August, with the peak season being mid- to late July. On fine days, it flies low to the ground and swarms over flower fields, but disappears as soon as the sun goes down. The food plants of its larvae are the Chinese lantern plant (Coleoptera lanuginosa), the yellow rhododendron (Ericaceae), and the Japanese black bean tree (Rhododendron nigra). In Japan, there are two closely related species of this species, the Sakhalin Leopard Swallowtail and the Narrow-leaved Leopard Swallowtail, both of which are found in Hokkaido.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目タテハチョウ科に属するチョウ。北海道大雪山群のおおよそ1800メートル以上の山地に分布する高山チョウで、国の天然記念物に指定されている。日本以外では中国東北部の大興安嶺(だいこうあんれい)、北シベリア、ラップランド、スカンジナビア、アラスカ、カナダ、北アメリカの山地など北極を巡る寒冷地に分布し、周極種circumpolar speciesとして知られている。日本のヒョウモンチョウ類のなかではもっとも小形。はねの開張は35ミリメートル内外。年1回発生し、普通7月上旬から8月中旬までみられ、7月中旬から下旬が最盛期。晴天の際は地上を低く、花畑の上を群飛するが、陽が陰るとたちまちその姿を消す。幼虫の食草はガンコウラン科のガンコウラン、ツツジ科のキバナシャクナゲ、クロマメノキである。日本では本種の近縁種にカラフトヒョウモン、ホソバヒョウモンの2種があり、ともに北海道に産する。
