Tetsuzan Nagata

An army officer during the Showa period. Born in Nagano Prefecture on January 14, 1884. Graduated from the 16th class of the Army Academy and the 23rd class of the Army War College. Was stationed in Germany, Denmark, and other countries for military research. While stationed in Switzerland in 1921 (Taisho 10), he made a pact with Obata Toshishiro, Okamura Yasuji, and Tojo Hideki to reform the army and build a total mobilization system, and later formed the Futabakai, a cross-sectional organization connecting mid-ranking staff officers from various ministries and bureaus. In 1926, he became head of the Mobilization Section of the Maintenance Bureau, in 1930 (Showa 5), head of the Military Affairs Section of the Military Affairs Bureau, and in 1932, headed the Second Department of the General Staff, before becoming head of the Military Affairs Bureau in 1934. During this time, he was a key promoter of the construction of a fascist total war system, and was a skilled military administrator. He was a leader of the control faction and was widely hailed as a future Minister of War, but he was also seen as the mastermind behind the replacement of Inspector General of Education Masaki Jinzaburo and as a conspirator with the zaibatsu and senior vassals, and was assassinated by Lieutenant Colonel Aizawa Saburo of the Imperial Way faction in the Director-General of the Military Affairs Bureau's office on August 12, 1935.
