Nieuwe Gids (English spelling)

However, it cannot be denied that the Netherlands was surrounded by cultural powers such as England, Germany, and France and was influenced by them. In 1860, E. Douwes Deckel published "Max Havelaar" under the pen name Multatulli, shocking the world by criticizing the harsh exploitation in the East Indies colonies, and in 1885, poets Kroes, Verwey, and critic L. van Deissel founded "Nieuwe Gids" and became the standard-bearers of a new literary movement.
