...The first talkie was NVEkk's (1902-59) film Guide to Life (1931), which depicted the rescue and educating of homeless children. The beginning of talkie production coincided with the promotion of socialist construction, and Soviet films in the 1930s placed socialist realism at the forefront of their work. Representative works of the new realism include Echo Project (1932), co-directed by FME Rmler and SI Yutkevich, which was about the achievement of the Five-Year Plan that began in 1927; Chapayev (1934), a heroic epic about the civil war directed by the Vasiliev brothers; and We from Kronshtadt (1936), directed by ELDzigan, which depicts the heroic struggle of sailors in a battle against the White Army. Soviet films had traditionally portrayed groups, rather than specific individuals, as protagonists, but director MI Romm (1901-71) portrayed Lenin as a human being in the historical context of the October Revolution in Lenin in October (1937) and Lenin in 1918 (1939).
