A British soldier and the last favorite of Queen Elizabeth. Despite his secret affair with Sir Philip Sidney's widow, he rapidly rose to prominence at court in the 1590s, consistently taking a hard-line stance against Spain, and leading the Spanish expedition to Cadiz. He was later promoted to Privy Councillor and Lord Constable, which led to growing criticism of his tyranny, which also led to criticism of the Queen. In 1599, after his failure to govern as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, he returned home without permission to explain his failure, and was stripped of his office and title. In 1601, he organized a rebellion, but it failed, and he was beheaded in the Tower of London. He was also known as a patron of the English Renaissance, which was gaining popularity at the time.
