This art developed in the 8th to 12th centuries in the Bihar and Bengal regions of India (present-day eastern India and Bangladesh), and represents the final period of Indian Buddhist art. Hindu art was also produced under the rule of the Sena dynasty. Buddhism had declined in other parts of India, but it flourished for the last time in this region under the protection of the Pala kings. It was also during this period that Mahayana Buddhism incorporated folk beliefs and underwent a new development as esoteric Buddhism (Vajrayana). Temples at Bodhgaya, Sarnath, Nalanda, and other places were expanded and remodeled, and new temples were built at Odantapuri (anciently named Uddanthapura), Vikramaśilā, Paharpur (anciently named Somapura), and other places.

8～12世紀にインドのビハール，ベンガル両地方(現在のインド東部とバングラデシュ)で展開した美術で，インド仏教美術の末期を代表し，セーナ朝治下ではヒンドゥー教美術も行われた。インドの他の地方では衰退した仏教もこの地方ではパーラ朝の諸王の保護をうけて最後の繁栄をみた。大乗仏教が民間信仰を取り入れて密教(金剛乗)として新しい展開を遂げたのもこの時代である。ボードガヤー，サールナート，ナーランダーなどの伽藍は増改築され，オーダンタプリーOdantapurī(古名ウッダンダプラ)，ビクラマシラーVikramaśilā，パハールプル(古名ソーマプラ)などの伽藍が新しく造営された。
