Setsuko Hara

A film actress. Born in Yokohama. She joined Nikkatsu in 1935 (Showa 10) after being recommended by her sister's husband, director Kumagai Hisatora. Her beauty attracted attention in films such as Yamanaka Sadao's Kochiyama Soshun (1936) and the German-Japanese coproduction A New Earth (1937). After World War II, she played intelligent heroines in Kurosawa Akira's No Regrets for Youth (1946), Yoshimura Kozaburo's The Ball of the Anjō Family (1947), and Imai Tadashi's Blue Mountains (1949), securing her a top star position. Her mythical image as the "eternal virgin" was solidified in Ozu Yasujirō's masterpieces Late Spring (1949) and Autumn Wheat (1951). He continued to appear in Ozu's films after that, but retired from the film industry in 1963.
