African rice

This type of rice is cultivated in western Africa, and is a different species from the rice (Asian rice) that is widely cultivated worldwide. It is said to have been cultivated from a wild rice species, O. breviligulata , and has been cultivated in the middle reaches of the Niger River since before Christ. Apart from the large grains, the few hairs on the husk, and the small ligule at the base of the leaf blade, it has many things in common with Asian rice. アフリカ西部に栽培されているイネで，世界的に広く栽培されているイネ(アジアイネ)とは異なった種に属する。野生稲の1種O.breviligulataより栽培化されたものといわれ，ニジェール川中流域において紀元前より栽培されている。穀粒が大型でもみ殻に毛の少ないこと，葉身基部の葉舌が小型であることのほかは，アジアイネと共通する点が多い。イネ【山崎 耕宇】
