This type of rice is cultivated in western Africa, and is a different species from the rice (Asian rice) that is widely cultivated worldwide. It is said to have been cultivated from a wild rice species, O. breviligulata , and has been cultivated in the middle reaches of the Niger River since before Christ. Apart from the large grains, the few hairs on the husk, and the small ligule at the base of the leaf blade, it has many things in common with Asian rice.
