It was named after Economo, a psychiatrist and professor at the University of Vienna, who discovered the pathology and treatment for this encephalitis when it was prevalent in Vienna, Austria, in 1917. 〘名〙 ウイルス性の嗜眠性脳炎。一九一七年オーストリアのウィーンで流行した時、ウィーン大学教授で、精神科医であったエコノモがこの脳炎に対する病理と対策とを明らかにしたところから名づけられた。
