Abstinence theory

Japanese: 節欲説 - せつよくせつ（英語表記）abstinence theory

A theory of interest explanation put forward by the 19th century British economist N. Senior, also known as the theory of temperance. He argued that human labor and natural forces are production factors, and that temperance is necessary. Just as wages are paid for labor, profits or interest on capital, which is compensation for the postponement of pleasure and the expectation, is also a reward for not using capital unproductively despite being able to dispose of it freely, and that without such temperance, production would not take place. A. Marshall inherited this theory and popularized it.

19世紀イギリスの経済学者 N.シーニアーが唱えた利子説明の理論で，制欲説ともいう。生産は人間労働および自然力を生産要因として，それに節欲が必要であるとする。その際に労働に対して労賃が支払われるのと同様に，享楽の延期，待望への代償である資本の利潤または利子も，資本を自由に処分できるにもかかわらず非生産的に使用しなかったことへの報酬であり，そうした人間の節欲がなければ生産が行われないとした。 A.マーシャルがこの説を継承して一般化した。
