Ammonium compounds NH 4 X (X is an acid group) are a general term for compounds in which all hydrogen atoms are replaced by hydrocarbon groups R. The general formula is NR 4 X. When heated, they decompose to produce tertiary amines. The hydroxides are strong bases comparable to alkali hydroxides. Tetraalkylammonium iodides and tetraalkylammonium hydroxides are typical quaternary ammonium compounds.
