Kanazawa Ryugyoku

Japanese: 金沢竜玉 - かなざわりゅうぎょく

A Kabuki kyogen writer. The great actor Nakamura Utaemon III often wrote the scripts for the plays he performed under this pen name. He gathered Kanazawa Shibasuke, Issen, and the playwright Hamamatsu Utakuni, among others, and personally took up his brush to rehash old kyogen plays. The play Hana to Yukikoi no Tekagami (Flower and Snow Love Mirror) (Child-Bearing), which remains in the surviving repertoire today, is said to be a collaboration between him and Nishizawa Ippo. It is a work that clearly shows a deep understanding of the physiology of the actor's art. He later passed the name on to Nakagawa Honsuke. [Watanabe Tamotsu]

歌舞伎の狂言作者。名優3世中村歌右衛門は，自分が上演する作品の脚本をしばしば作ったが，そのときの筆名。金沢芝助，一洗，戯作者浜松歌国らを集め，みずから筆をとって古狂言の焼直しをしたりした。今日伝存する演目に残った《花雪恋手鑑（はなとゆきこいのてかがみ）》(乳貰い)は，西沢一鳳と彼との合作だという。いかにも俳優の芸の生理を心得た作品である。後に奈河本助にこの名を譲った。【渡辺保】
