Also known as Minoan writing. A general term for writing used primarily in the Cretan-Mycenaean cultural sphere in the 2nd millennium BC. There are hieroglyphics (before 1700 BC), Linear A, and Linear B. Linear A was used around 1800-1400 BC and is thought to be of Indo-European or Semitic origin in Asia Minor, but has not yet been deciphered. Linear B is also known as Mycenaean writing, and was used from the 16th to 12th centuries BC. A typeface based on Linear A, it is a type of syllabary that combines consonants and vowels. ミノア文字とも。主として前２千年紀のクレタ・ミュケナイ文化圏で使われた文字の総称。象形文字（前1700年以前）と線文字A，線文字Bがある。線文字Aは前1800年―前1400年ころ使用され，小アジアの印欧語系かセム語系と思われるが未解読。線文字Bはミュケナイ文字とも呼ばれ，前16―前12世紀にかけて使用された。線文字Aをもとに作られた書体で，子音と母音の結合した音節文字の一種。ベントリスによって古いギリシア語であることが解明された。→ミュケナイ文書
