Hayashi Dokkosai

Japanese: 林読耕斎 - はやし・どっこうさい
Hayashi Dokkosai
Year of death: 12 March 1661 (11 April 1661)
Year of birth: November 21, 1624 (December 31, 1624)
A Confucian scholar of the early Edo period. His first name was Morikatsu, later Yasushi or Shuntoku. His first character was Shibun, later Hikofuku. He was commonly known as Ukon. He was also known as Kanzo and Yokkosai. He was the fourth son of Hayashi Razan. He was born in Kyoto, and later moved to Edo. He learned reading from his older brother Gaho from an early age, and from Razan's disciples such as Hori Kyoan and Nawa Katsusho, as well as from Ryocho of Konchi-in. He was a man of great learning and knowledge, poring over all the books in his father's and the Mito family's collections, devoting himself to poetry and renku, and writing for his father on the compilation and selection of "Toyotomi Hideyoshi Fu" and "Chucho Teio Fu," and communicating by letter with Korean envoys. He was often ill and did not like government work, and was repeatedly advised by the Shogunate to inherit his uncle's branch of the family, but he did not follow their advice. In 1646 (Shoho 3), he was forced to shave his head and become a Shogunate Confucian scholar at the request of the Elders of the Shogunate. In 1656 (Meireki 2), he became a Hokan. His main work, "Honcho Soshi: A Collection of Hermits," is an expression of his desire for seclusion. His literary works, including the selection of the 36 Shisen-do poets, show the hedonistic side of the early Hayashi family.
