Miyake Shosai

Miyake Shosai

A Confucian scholar in the mid-Edo period. His given name was Shigemoto, and his pen name was Jisso. He was from Akashi, Harima Province (Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture). He was a disciple of Yamazaki Ansai, and was called one of the three great men of the Kimono school along with Sato Naokata and Asami Keisai. He served the Abe family of Oshi, Musashi Province, but was imprisoned for speaking his mind. He later opened a private school in Kyoto, excelled in lecturing on Buddhist scriptures, and had many disciples, including Kume Teisai (1699-1784), Ishio Saiken (1701-1780), and Kani Yosai (1705-1778), forming a large school of scholars. He passed away on January 29, 6th year of Genbun, at the age of 80. He was buried at Shinkurodani Shiunzan (Konkai Komyoji Temple) in Kyoto. 江戸中期の儒者。名は重固(しげもと)、字(あざな)は実操。播磨(はりま)国明石(あかし)(兵庫県明石市)の人。山崎闇斎(やまざきあんさい)の門にあって、佐藤直方(さとうなおかた)、浅見絅斎(あさみけいさい)とともに崎門(きもん)の三傑といわれた。武蔵(むさし)国忍(おし)の阿部家に仕官したが直言したために幽囚された。のち京都に塾を開き、経書講釈に優れ、久米訂斎(くめていさい)(1699―1784)、石王塞軒(いしおうさいけん)(1701―1780)、蟹養斎(かにようさい)(1705―1778)など多数の門人を擁し、一大学派を形成した。元文(げんぶん)6年1月29日没、80歳。京都新黒谷紫雲山(金戒光明寺)に葬られる。著述はすこぶる多く、『為学要説(いがくようせつ)』1巻、『祭祀来格(さいしらいかく)説』1巻、『黙識録』6巻(以上『日本倫理彙(い)編』所収)、『狼疐録(ろうちろく)』3巻(『甘雨亭叢書(そうしょ)』所収)、『養子弁証附録』1巻(『日本儒林双書』所収)、『為後称呼説』1巻(『日本儒林双書』所収)などは刊本がある。
