A former town in Mikata County facing the Sea of Japan in northwestern Hyogo Prefecture. Hamasaka, located in the center and on the San'in Main Line, is a base for inshore fishing. Food processing includes chikuwa (fish paste jelly), and sewing needles are a specialty of the town. Rice and horticultural crops are also produced. In October 2005, it merged with Onsen Town in Mikata County to become Shin-Onsen Town in Mikata County. Area: 102.98 km2 . Population: 11,324 (2003).
